The Book of Life - Part 7

Apologies. Been busy and traveling so I inadvertently (honestly) forgot to enter the two new FOX comedies into The Book of Life. Here we go:

Full disclosure. Before I left FOX I advocated pairing GRANDFATHERED and THE GRINDER together on Tuesday night. They both starred established handsome TV dudes. They were both family comedies of sorts and they both had more heart than your typical FOX comedies. They felt broader and truth be told I think their total audience is larger than the comedies FOX had in there last season.

I honestly have no idea where these comedies fell on the promotion/marketing spectrum for FOX and it felt to me (could be wrong) that they were sold more separately rather than as a block...but I could be wrong about that. I have to believe SCREAM QUEENS and EMPIRE were given far more weight.

None of this is an excuse for the fact that neither of these shows are working. The Masked Wife, who is an excellent evaluater of TV shows (far better than me) really liked THE GRINDER and was lukewarm on GRANDFATHERED. She immediately labelled the son a doofus and felt the mom/son relationship was "creepy". By the way there is a long tradition of the FOX doofus in their comedies.  I'll write about it one of these days. Anyway, we sat down and watched the second episodes of both shows and she was out on both of them. Appears that she's not alone.

So what's gonna happen? Well Stamos is making it easy for them to stop GRANDFATHERED after 13 (assuming he's not incarcerated) so GRANDFATHERED                                                              WILL CELEBRATE THEIR B'NAI MITZVAH
but that should be it.

THE GRINDER has been better received and even though the ratings drop from GRANDFATHERED I have a gut feeling that FOX may try to salvage this one so
SET A PLACE AT THE SEDER TABLE
for THE GRINDER.

Again apologies for the delay in this post.

  1. I can't believe that Fox cancelled the Mindy Project and then proceeded to give us Grandfathered. Mindy Project was a smart comedy.

  2. Huh in my armchair punditry I had it the other way round, partly because of the ratings and partly because grandfathered felt like one show but the grinder felt like 5 (funnier) shows. You're probably right though, really loving this series!
